How to cook rice
Cooking rice is simple, but getting the right texture depends on the type of rice and method used. Here’s a basic stovetop method for white rice:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rice (white, long-grain or medium-grain)
- 2 cups water
Instructions:
- Rinse the Rice: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents it from being too sticky.
- Boil the Water: In a pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- Add the Rice: Stir in the rice, lower the heat to a gentle simmer, and cover with a tight-fitting lid.
- Simmer: Cook on low heat for about 15 minutes (for white rice). Do not lift the lid or stir.
- Rest the Rice: Turn off the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5-10 minutes. This helps it absorb any remaining moisture.
- Fluff and Serve: Use a fork to fluff the rice before serving.
Other Methods:
- Rice Cooker: Use a 1:2 rice-to-water ratio and let the machine do the work.
- Instant Pot: Use a 1:1 ratio, cook on high pressure for 3-5 minutes, and let it naturally release for 10 minutes.
